In March I went on a trip to Central America visiting Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. We went by British Airways to Cancun in Mexico (a flight of 11 hours).
Mexico is famous for old Mayan cities, built by the Maya people some of which are still being excavated. The Maya are an indigenous people of Mexico and Central America dating back as long ago as 2600 BC. They have continuously inhabited the lands comprising modern-day Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco, and Chiapas in Mexico and southward through Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras.
The first we went to was Chitzen Itsa which our group renamed Chicken Pizza! This city is very well known and was built as a pyramid & temple to the god Kukulkan. There were masses of visitors. It is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)
Other Mayan cities we visited were Palenque where I climbed the steps of one of the buildings and had my photo taken looking out to
the Palace. Tikal in Guatemala and Tulum in Belize which is on the coast.
Along the way we visited many cities including Antigua in Guatemala which is surrounded by active volcanoes – during the night we could hear the rumblings from them and in the daytime could see the clouds of steam.
We had a horse ride up one of the volcanoes and tried to cook marshmallows using the heat from the rocks in one of the craters
Other places we visited were the Blue Waterfalls in Guatemala and the
Sumidero Canyon. This canyon has cliffs over 1000 feet high and is full of wild life.
As the trip involved a speed boat and all the passengers had to wear life jackets I was not allowed to go as they could not find one small enough for me.
A shame as there was lots of wild animals there including crocodiles and vultures
On San Pedro Island in Belize we went out to the reef to look at the corals and fish. I did not go in as it would have messed up my fur, so I just looked on.
During the trip we used all sorts of transport including coaches, tuk-tuks – sort of motorised richshaw, pick-up trucks, ferries, canoes, a small propeller airplane, horses and a chicken
bus.
The chicken buses are called that because local people use them to get to market and often put their chickens and other live stock on board.
Flags of the Countries I visited Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.
Thank you
to John for giving me such a great trip.
